About the project

NoMAD MOVIE ART 2022 was the first collaboration between Split Nomad Gallery and the Mediterranean Film Festival Split – FMFS.

As part of the project, artists interpreted selected movie classics in digital format through various media, from graphic design and illustration to photography and typography.
Their artwork did not necessarily have to contain the information a traditional movie poster should, but instead needed to instantly allude to the film they were interpreting.
The signed, limited-edition posters exhibition premiered at the 15th edition of the Mediterranean Film Festival Split held at the Bačvice Open Air Cinema, where they were available for purchase at promotional prices.

The artists combined film and visual art, producing diverse and original pieces, but also offering a space for creative, interdisciplinary exchange with the audience, attracted by the timeless theme of film classics. After the festival, the exhibition was housed by a multipurpose space Smartspace in the center of Split, July through October, where it greeted local audiences as well as thousands of interested visitors from abroad.

  • This striking poster by Croatian graphic designer Nikša Vukša offers a clever and surreal take on Yorgos Lanthimos’ cult film Dogtooth (2009). The artist weaves in key symbols from the film—a VHS cassette transformed into a doberman, the silhouette of an airplane, a turquoise grid evoking the family pool, and bright yellow garden flowers—creating a layered image that mirrors the film’s eerie blend of innocence and control. Author’s use of bold color and graphic forms captures the tension between the artificial and the absurd.

  • With bold lines and primal humor, this minimalist poster by Croatian artist Mate Žaja reinterprets John Milius’ cult fantasy epic Conan the Barbarian (1982). Featuring an iconic battle cry turned typographic artwork, the piece distills the raw energy of Conan’s world into a graphic punch of color and form. The exaggerated features and comic-book simplicity create a unique visual tribute—both playful and powerful—that captures the film’s larger-than-life spirit and enduring place in pop culture.

  • This deeply personal and poetic interpretation by Croatian artist Aida Tosuni Petričević imagines Ridley Scott’s cult classic Blade Runner (1982) through a striking monochrome composition, softened by delicate textures and emotional symbolism. Created shortly after the passing of Vangelis, the legendary composer of the film’s soundtrack, the artwork is dedicated to him—and reflects a moment of personal resonance between artist and film. The haunting final monologue, “All those moments will be lost in time…”, is hand-drawn into the character’s form, while the surrounding rain, birds, and high-rise silhouettes evoke themes of memory, mortality, and what it means to be human.
